Very durable

Array of sizes

Array of colors

Cons:

Made in China

The Lodge Enameled Dutch Oven is one of the best cast iron pots with lid on the market today. It comes in multiple different sizes and colors so it can take on any of your kitchen’s needs. This product is easy to clean and can sustain temperatures up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit so it’s good for most jobs. It weighs in at 16 pounds.

Porcelain Enamel
Just as you wouldn’t use any old fillet knife to prepare the perfect fish, you can’t use any old pot to prepare the perfect meal. The Lodge Enameled Dutch Oven is a versatile item that can be used for several jobs around the kitchen.

This product is finished with a porcelain enamel that has been bonded to the cast iron in a process that takes time and heat up to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit. The finished product resists wear and tear and disperses heat super evenly for the perfect cook every time. For these reasons, we score this product super highly in the Durability and Taste categories.

Super Easy to Use
This is one of the easiest products to maintain on our list. It is even safe to go in the dishwasher, though we suggest hand washing in warm water with a detergent that is not citrus based or super abrasive. You should not use metal brushes or pads to clean as this could damage the finish.

We give major points for Ease of Use here, but dock points for taste as washing in this way doesn’t allow for a good seasoning to build up.

Cost and Value
The Lodge Enameled Dutch Oven rings up in the middle of our price range and we love its value because it is one of the easiest pots to use which makes it a great introductory option and because it comes in an array of sizes and colors to choose from.

And you’ll enjoy so many different size and color options.

Non-Sticking Interior
The Landhaus Enameled Dutch Oven boasts an incredible non-sticking interior. This product has 4 coats of enamel so that your meal gets heated evenly throughout and will not stick to the bottom. We give this product points in the Ease of Use department and Taste department for this.

Larger Handles
The Cuisinart is one heavy-duty product. It weighs in at around 20 pounds, so for most it will be a two-handed job. That’s why it’s so great that it has extra-large handles so that transporting the pot is much easier, even if you are wearing oven mitts. We give points in the Weight department here.

Cons:

Some issues with rusting

Not only is it one of the most durable products out there, but it is super versatile and can play well on the campfire and on the stove. Plus, it comes pre-seasoned and ready to cook delicious and memorable meals.

Pre-Seasoned
The Lodge Pre-Seasoned Dutch Oven is just that--pre-seasoned. This product has been seasoned with veggie oil for an initial good flavoring, so we give major points in the Taste category. And, as with most cast irons, the more you use it, the more flavor it will develop and the better your food will taste.

Approved for Campfire
This is a versatile little pot. Because it is not coated in enamel, it is safe to be used on the campfire and at extremely high temperatures around the kitchen. We give points for Ease of Use point for this.

The 5-Quart weighs in at 13 pounds, so we give points in the Weight category as it is not too heavy. This product comes in a few different sizes for you to choose from.

Pros:

Comes with a skillet as a lid

Not super heavy

Domed for more space

Cons:

Some didn’t care for preseasoning

The Bruntmor Pre-Seasoned 2 In 1 is the first on our list to double as a pot and a skillet. Yes! You heard right. The lid on this product will actually serve as a separate skillet as well so you get twice the amount of cookware for a super low price which is a deal we can really get behind. Plus, it comes preseasoned as well.

Skillet for Lid
This item comes with 2 pieces of kitchen gear--a pot and a skillet. The lid converts into a skillet for even more versatility in cooking.

We love that both the pot and the skillet lid come with large handles to make maneuvering easier and safer--especially at high temperatures. We give Ease of Use points here.

Domed for Roasts
The Bruntmor is also ideal for roasting as the lid is domed to allow more space on the inside. This product only comes in the one size (5 quarts), but the extra space is an added bonus here. Plus, it is still lightweight at just 13 pounds so we give Weight points for this.

This product does come preseasoned, though some were not so thrilled with the seasoning and suggested reseasoning yourself. Remember to season both the lid and the pot if you plan on using the lid as a skillet. We take some points for taste here.

Cons:

Quite heavy

It is enameled on the inside so it will help to keep your food from cooking and it is easier to transport with larger handles for your convenience.

Secure Lid
The AmazonBasics comes with a super secure fitting lid. That makes this a great companion for slow cooking and for storing and marinating food as well. We give points for Ease of Use here.

This product is safe to go in the over and can withstand temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Because it is coated in enamel, it will not react with the different foods you cook, but you will not be able to build up a flavor base. We docked points for taste here.

Easy Transport Handles
This comes with larger handles so the product is easier to transport.

However, some reviewers report that the enamel coating is very thin and can chip easily so we dock points in the Durability category here. You should not wash in the dishwasher because of this.

It weighs in at just over 13 pounds.

Cost and Value
The AmazonBasics Enameled Dutch Oven rings up on the lower end of our price range and we love its value because it is versatile in cooking as well as in food storage and will add a lovely pop of color to your kitchen’s style.

Pros:

Cons:

Not a great preseasoning

The Utopia Kitchen Pre Seasoned is the most budget friendly and affordable option on our list by far, but don’t let that fool you. If you are looking for an introductory piece or you just want something that’s a little more simple, this could be the perfect fit for you. Plus, it is super lightweight at just around 7 pounds so it’s easier to work with.

Lighter Weight
The Utopia Kitchen is one of the lightest options on our list. It weighs just above 7 pounds which makes it a great option for those who want the benefits of a cast iron but who may not be able to wield the full weight of one. We give major points in the Weight category for this.

High-Temp Approved
This pre-seasoned pot may be lightweight and inexpensive, but it can still handle the super high heats of broiling in the oven up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. And on top of that, it is super durable so we give points for Ease of Use here.

While it does come preseasoned, several reviewers report needing to reseason themselves so we take points from Taste here.

Cost and Value
The Utopia Kitchen Pre Seasoned rings up at the very bottom of our price range and we like its value because it is the most budget-friendly on our list and can still hold up for a long time if you follow the proper care instructions (which we have laid out in the Frequently Asked Questions section and Expert Tips section below).

Pros:

Super large size

Great in high temperatures

Nice pre-seasoning

Cons:

Can’t fully hold 16 quarts

The King Kooker Pre-Seasoned is a great option for open fire cooking, as well as cooking in the home. Buyers are impressed with the pre-seasoning on this product so we give Taste points here. Folks are also impressed with the amount that they can fit inside. This is truly a heavy-duty pot as it weighs in at just over 30 pounds. Handle with care!

Very Large
The King Kooker is the largest item on our list so far. There is some debate on whether or not it can actually hold 16 quarts, but regardless, most agree that it can hold over 14.

In fact, we have reviewers stating that they can fry two whole chickens at the very same time in this pot, no problems. We give points for Size here.

Hot Handle
It has a super neat feature in its hot handle. This feature allows for the handle to have a cooler grip as it has a spiral at the center. This is super important because the pot is very heavy (30 pounds) and you will need to grab hold of the handle very well so that you can safely take the pot from cooking to serving. We give Ease of Use points for this feature.

If you make sure to take good care of this product, you will find it to be durable, though larger products ofter get neglected for proper care.

Cost and Value
The King Kooker rings up in the middle of our price range and we like its value because it is enormous and super durable and well seasoned. If you have a lot of people to cook for--and we mean a lot, this is just the right pot for you.

Pros:

Nice thick walls

Keeps food warmer for longer

Heats up super quickly

Doubles as a serving dish

Cons:

Hard to keep clean

The Commercial Chef Dutch Oven is another great option that is super kind to the pocketbook. While being on the very affordable end, it is still thick and pre-seasoned, and provides you with all of the benefits of a more elite cast iron pot. Plus it holds heat so well that it can even double as a warming serving dish so you get more out of its use every time.

Thick and Insulated
The Commercial Chef does not scrimp on thickness just because it is a more affordable item. In fact, it still had a nice thickness that keeps your food super-insulated and that works to provide even heat in less time which means faster cooking times and faster eating. We give points for Ease of Use here.

With that thickness does come a bit of extra weight and this product weighs in at 15 pounds, so we take a few points away for Weight here.

Great for Serving
This pot also doubles as a great warming serving dish because it stays so well insulated due to its thickness. That means that it will keep your food warmer for longer while also looking super nice and rustic on your table. We give points for Ease of Use here.

Cost and Value
The Commercial Chef rings up at the bottom of our price range and we like its value because it is thick and durable despite being a budget option. And as long as it is given the proper care, you can enjoy this cooking item for a long time.

Pros:

Smaller size for smaller jobs

Weighs just 9 pounds

Nice seal on the lid

Self-basting lid

Broiler and campfire safe

Cons:

Needs to be seasoned multiple times

The Bayou Classic 2.5-Qt. Bean Pot is a smaller pot that will bring a big amount of charming rustic flair to your kitchen. Even though it is small, it weighs in at 9 pounds and can hold up to 2.5 quarts of food. You will have to season this product on your own and you’ll be able to use it for campfire cooking or on your stove at home.

Lid is Self-Basting
The Bayou Classic 2.5-Qt. Bean Pot features a lid that is self-basting. This means that the juices from what you’re cooking will evaporate, make contact with the lid, and fall back onto your food, re-basting it continually during the cooking process. We give Taste points here.

We like that this product is safe for the broiler, the stove, and the campfire. We give Ease of Use points here.

Season, Season, Season
This pot does not come seasoned. You will need to do this on your own. And you will likely need to do it more than once. We read from many reviewers that this pot is a dream after being seasoned around 4-6 times.

Before this many seasonings, a lot of sticking and uneven cooking was happening, but after seasonings, reviewers are generally quite satisfied with the effectiveness and taste. However, we take some Ease of Use points here as this is an involved process.

Users find that it holds up well with the right care so we give Durability points for that.

Cost and Value
The Bayou Classic rings up at the very bottom of our price range and we like its value because it is a great small-sized budget option that can get the job done if you know how to season it correctly and treat it with loving care.

Criteria Used for Evaluation

Ease of Use

When considering products, we took into account how easy they were to use. We determine a product’s Ease of Use score by looking at how easy it is to clean and maintain, whether or not it comes sufficiently preseasoned, how well the lid fits, and what different purposes it can be used for.

We value products that are relatively simple to maintain. We say “relatively” because maintaining cast iron is more involved than with your average cookware--see our Expert Tips section below. The trade-off is more than worth it, though.

We also like a pot that that seals sufficiently and that can be used for multiple different dishes. And, of course, we like when it comes appropriately preseasoned without needing to go through another seasoning process once you pull it out of the box.

Durability

Durability is another key concern of ours. When looking at how durable a product is, we take a look at how well the enamel holds up on the product and at the occurrence or likelihood of rusting.

While all products can be chipped and rust if not properly taken care of, we are looking at the frequency with which this occurs under regular use. We didn't bother including any options on our list that didn't score very well in the Durability category.

Taste

When considering taste, we look at whether or not the pot was preseasoned and how well this process held. We also look at the effect of seasoning (by either yourself or pre) at the overall outcome of meal tastes.

Weight

Because cast iron pots tend to be very heavy, we made sure to list the weights of each product so that you can have a clear idea about what you’re getting yourself into. While you may be thinking that heavier means more durable, this isn’t always the case. So pay attention to our reviews to guide you.

Value

Often times in cookware, it’s worth splurging on the more expensive items as they just hold up better over time. While this isn’t always true, we find that the higher end products on our list really do hold up better, though this still rests partially on you and how you maintain your pot.

Cleaning Cast Iron Pots

This is perhaps the most daunting task of owning a cast iron skillet and, indeed, the thing that owners get wrong the most. But here’s the thing: it’s not actually that hard! So here are some tips to get it done right.

1. Clean your pot after every single use. This will make the process much easier on you in the long haul. To do this, you’ll want to grab some paper towels to remove any food or oils left behind.

2. Don’t use a brush that is abrasive or that is metal. Using these kinds of brushes can cause you to damage your pan, or at the least, remove the good seasoning that you’ve built up. Use a brush that has sturdy bristles but that isn’t made of metal.

3. It’s okay to use a bit of soap if you want, but you really don’t need to--scrubbing with the brush is enough. If you do, you must make sure that you rinse super thoroughly to get it all off.

4. Do not let your pan air dry or drip dry. After you have scrubbed with your brush, put your pan back on the burner to allow the heat to dry your pan completely.

5. Oil her up! Remove the pan from the heat and then massage in a bit of oil evenly to your entire skillet with a paper towel. Use additional paper towels to ensure there are no spots that are especially oily.

6. Store in a dry place.

How to Season a Cast Iron Pot

There are tons and tons of different suggestions out there on how to properly season your cast iron pots and pans. We’ve narrowed them down to a few basic methods that most people can agree on.

1. The Salt Method: Cover the base of your pot in about a quarter-inch thick of kosher salt. Then you are going to want to add another ½ inch or so of oil (do not use olive oil as this does not have a high enough burn temp). Put on the highest heat setting on your stovetop. Dump out the contents in a heat-safe bowl when you notice the oil smoking. Then ball up a bunch of paper towels and rub down the inside of your pot until all is smooth and there aren’t big patches of oily spots.

2. The Shortening and Oven Method: For this method, you’ll want to simply add shortening that you have melted or veggie oil in a layer that is thin on the pot. Crank the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the pot upside down on the middle rack, making sure that you place a dish underneath the pot so that it can catch the oil dripping off and save you a lot of clean up later. Bake in the oven for 1 hour.

Other Factors to Consider

Color

Let’s be honest, cookware has become even more of a fashionable industry than before. And many pride themselves on having their cookware coordinate with their kitchen decor. You may even find yourself wanting to get new cookware after you’ve remodeled your kitchen.

For this reason, we value brands that offer multiple different color options for their cast iron so that every person can find the perfect style for their home.

Size

We mention the special consideration we made for weight earlier, as some people will just have trouble handling some of the heavier and larger pots. We also consider the different size options that brands have available. We value brands that offer multiple sizing options so that you can find the right piece for your home or camping needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

q: Is the iron on the cast iron pot dangerous?

a:

No! In fact, we need iron in our diet. If you are using a cast iron pot to make something like a Sunday evening tomato based pasta sauce, you can increase the iron in a dish like this up to 20%.

q: Where should I store my cast iron pot?

a:

There are a few different ways that you can store your cast iron to ensure that it doesn’t rust. The first thing that you are going to want to do is ensure that it isn’t stored where there is likely to be water. Water=rust. So not, for example, underneath the sink.

Our favorite places for storage include on top of the stove and inside of the oven. These places are almost always dry and are generally warm which encourages the pots to stay dry as well.

We also want to remind you that if you are stacking your cast iron, you should always put a protective layer like a paper towel between them to ensure that no scratches develop from stacking.

Also, make sure you leave the lid off during storage as this can also cause moisture to build up which can contribute to rusting.

q: How can I get rust off if it does develop?

a:

Even if you are the best cast iron pot parent, rust can still develop. To remove it, soak your pot in a 1 to 1 mixture of white vinegar and water. Let soak fully submerged for about an hour but only soak just until the rust is gone. You don’t want to leave it in for longer as this can cause the vinegar to eat away at the cast iron as well.
