Camping tents are an excellent way for people to enjoy the great outdoors. They provide us with a shelter that can protect our bodies and our gear against the weather. Many offer shade, protection against the wind, and even protection against the rain. Others are designed to help us stay warm in cold weather.

These are great for spending a couple days outside because they provide you with a secure place for your gear. In many cases, these have sunrooms so that you can stay outside without getting bit by bugs or insects.

Others are smaller and are geared towards hiking and backpacking. They are small enough so that you can attach them to a backpack and you can set these up quickly so that you can get to sleep easily after a hard day of hiking. These are normally large enough for one or two adults plus their gear.

In summation, there is likely a tent that will fit your needs. If you need a tent for an emergency, then you will find plenty of options. Likewise, if you are looking for a lightweight tent that is for yourself that you can set up quickly, there are products for that use case also. People who have families will have plenty of affordable tent options to pick from. There are more than enough to go around for everyone.

Criteria Used to Evaluate Camping Tents

Size

One of the places that you will likely want to start thinking about is the size. These come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes so you will need to pick one that has the proper size for your needs. That means that you will need one with the proper amount of square footage and it will also need to be tall enough for your needs. Most of the time, it is not a huge problem if you end up purchasing one that is too large but one that is too small can quickly turn into a problem.

These are typically advertised by the number of adults that can supposedly fit inside. It is important to keep in mind that either the manufacturer uses really small people when they are saying how many adults fit inside or they are overestimating the number of adults that can comfortably fit. This is because a tent almost never fits the number of advertised adults comfortably. Many that are advertised as four-person will typically only sleep two or three adults. If you try to fit four people, you will feel very tight and will likely be bumping into another person.

Furthermore,  the space only leaves room for people and not gear. So in other words, if you are getting a four-person enclosure and hope to fit backpacks, shoes, or other gear in the tent, then you will be out of luck. A four-person enclosure will not have room for four people and gear so this is something that you will need to keep in mind because people always have at least extra clothing. Generally speaking, you will want to assume that a two-person enclosure will have room for one adult plus her or hear gear. A four-person one will have space for two adults and their gear, and so on.

However, you will also want to consider the total amount of floor space as well. These products will almost always specify this in terms of square feet. You may find it to be helpful to look at this figure as well when you are determining the size of your camping tent because it will give you a more accurate picture as to the amount of room that you will have. This will help you accurately figure out how many people can sleep inside as well have to make sure that you have enough room for your gear.

The other thing that you will need to consider when you are looking at the size of a camping tent is the height. When you are doing this, you will need to think about the fact that most do not have vertical walls like a house does but instead, the walls are either rounded in dome-shaped or they are slanted in the case of V-shaped camping enclosures. When the height is specified by the manufacturer, they are talking about the highest point as measured from the floor. This does not mean that the ceiling height is uniform. As a matter of fact, that is far from the case.

What this means is that the center is the tallest point and as you move towards the edge the ceiling will get lower. You will need to think about this in case you want to be able to stand up straight while you are inside. No matter what you do, you will most likely have to accept that you will need to bend or crouch down as you approach the edge but a taller enclosure will provide you with more walking space than a shorter one.

Size is an important part of owning a camping enclosure for many different reasons. Some are small and are intended to be used by backpackers while others are large and meant for family camping. When you are picking out a product, you need to make sure that it at least has enough room for everyone who will be sleeping inside plus their gear. Furthermore, if you plan on being able to stand up while you are inside, then you will also have to keep the height. You should not worry if yours ends up being a little larger than needed because it is better to have one that is too larger rather than one that is too small.

Outdoor Protection

The intended purpose of these products is to provide you with a temporary shelter so that you are protected from the weather. This will allow you to have a place to go so that you are protected from things such as the sun, wind, rain, ground moisture, and insects. Tents are meant to provide you with a degree of safety so that you do not get sick, injured, or in general feel uncomfortable while you are spending time outside. For this reason, you will want to look at how well it can protect you from the outside environment. The better the tent is able to provide you with a good shelter, the happier you will be.

Rain and moisture are the first things that you will want to check while you are purchasing a camping tent. This is because getting caught in the rain can make your clothes feel heavy and wet and it will also lower your body temperature. This can be further exasperated when rain is combined with wind because the wind blowing water from your skin causes evaporation which lowers your body temperature. These products must be able to protect you from wind and rain so that you do not feel miserable at the minimum or get sick in more severe cases.

It also matters that it can protect you from moisture on the ground as well. Even when it is not raining, the ground can collect dew in the morning because the humidity will condense on the ground. This can cause you to get dirty and muddy and the ground moisture can even soak into your sleeping bag which may cause it to lose its ability to insulate you. When it rains, the ground will get soaked with rainwater and may even flood a little bit while the water is sinking into the ground. This is why you will want to make sure that yours is waterproof on all sides so that you can stay dry while you are inside.

Wind tends to come with rain but even when it is dry outside, you will want to make sure that your tent protects you from the wind. Blowing air almost always leads to a drop in body temperature and wind will also blow dust and allergens around as well. You need to make sure that you are protected from the wind so that you can feel warm enough to sleep and also to protect your face, skin, and eyes from anything that is blowing in the wind. When there is rain combined with wind, you will need to protect yourself from the wind and stay dry so that your body temperature does not drop. This is because the wind will evaporate water from your skin which will remove heat away from your body and cause you to feel cold.

Your tent also needs to protect your body on sunny days as well. Sunlight has UV radiation which is the light that causes sunburns. Too much exposure to UV light will make your skin burn and can lead to skin cancer later on in life. UV will also damage your eyes as well so this is another reason to stay protected from the sun. Many are sold with a UPF rating that will inform you as to how much UV protection you can expect to get from the sun. The higher the rating, the more you will be protected so you should always try and find a tent that has the highest UPF rating that you can find.

The enclosure also needs to properly regulate the internal temperature so that you do not feel too hot during summer days or too cold during spring, fall, or winter days. In the summer, sunshine will warm the air in the enclosure which causes the temperature to rise.  On the other hand, during colder seasons, the enclosure must trap warm air so that you will feel warm. You should look at the material of canvas as well as how thick it is to see how well it will regulate its temperature.

The main purpose of owning an enclosure is to give you a shelter while you are outside. For this reason, the tent needs to be able to protect you from the outdoor weather so that you can camp in comfort and in safety. Some of the most important things that you need protection from are moisture and wind, but you will also want to check into how well the enclosure protects you from other outdoor hazards as well. The better the tent is able to provide you with shelter, the happier you will be.

Canvas Material

While the poles of a tent provide you with the shape and structure, it is the tent canvas material that ultimately provides you with shelter. For this reason, you will want to think about the different kinds of canvas materials that are commonly used for these camping products discussed in today’s article. Some canvas materials are heavy and durable while other materials are lighter weight and cost less. The canvas is one of the most important parts of the tent since it will determine how long the tent lasts, how much it costs, and how well it will protect you from the outdoors.

Canvas tents are products that are made from a canvas that is made from pure cotton. Cotton is a great material for a tent because it will naturally retain heat in the cooler weather but it also breaths well and lets heat escape in the summer weather. This makes cotton a great choice for when you are concerned about thermoregulation in your tent. While cotton canvas is a proven material, it has a few known drawbacks that make it into a less popular choice for tents.

One of the main drawbacks of pure cotton is that it is heavy which make it much harder to carry the tent. The weight of cotton tends to be a show stopper for many backpackers or for anyone who needs to carry their tent without the use of a vehicle. Cotton as needs to get weather proofed because cotton on its own absorbs moisture and needs to be treated in order to repel water. One of the most attractive features of cotton products is that they are highly durable and will resist wear and tear from usage and the weather. So if you are willing to deal with the material’s limitations, which is mainly weight, then you will have a strong and long-lasting tent.

You may also see ones that are made from polycotton. Polycotton is a material that combines cotton with polyester which seeks to offer you the benefits of using cotton while limiting some of its drawbacks. One of the main advantages of polycotton over regular cotton is that polycotton weighs less than pure cotton. This will allow you to transport a tent more easily than what you might transport a heavy duty cotton tent. Polycotton still breathes well and will help protect you from the water after it has been treated to be water resistant. These features make polycotton into an excellent alternative for a completely cotton tent.

If you are looking for a tent that is lightweight and costs less, then you will want to check out nylon. Nylon is a popular material that is usually used in inexpensive products. One of the main advantages that nylon has over cotton and polycotton is that the material does not absorb water. This allows a manufacturer to use less material when they make the tent out of nylon which results in a tent that weighs and costs less. Nylon products are an ideal choice for backpackers thanks to the lightweight so if you plan on carrying your tent with you, then you will most likely want to consider nylon.

Nylon is not as durable as cotton and it will not last as long either. For example, nylon will start to break down when it has been exposed to too much sunshine. It is also more likely to rip and tear if something rubs against the enclosure. For these reasons, you will need to accept that you may need to replace your enclosure more often than a higher quality tent or spend a little extra on a high priced enclosure.

There is also polyester, which is a man-made material that is a lightweight option. Polyester materials have many of the benefits of both cotton and nylon products which can make it into an ideal material. For example, it is more durable than nylon and can stand exposure to the sun plus polyester is lightweight so it is easy to carry with you. You will want to make sure that the polyester is breathable, however, otherwise, the enclosure can end getting hot and stuffy when you are inside of it.

Enclosure are made from many different materials but cotton, nylon, and polyester tend to be the most popular materials. You should go for nylon when you are looking for a lightweight option that doesn’t cost a lot, but when you are looking for a tent that will last longer, then you should favor cotton or polyester. You should also keep in mind that each material acts differently and has different properties and this will affect the tent. Cotton is highly durable but it is also heavy and would not be a good choice for backpacking. On the other hand, cotton is a great choice for four seasons products. You will need to consider your specific needs as a camper and make sure that you get a tent that is proper for your needs.

Features

Just like everything else in this world, camping products have different features that are used to help you differentiate between products. Some features are important for you to have while other features can enhance the enclosure and make it more useful but aren’t necessary either. One that has a lot of features will cost more than one that only has a few features so this will be an important consideration as well when you are picking out a product. In some case, you may want to spend more so that it has more features while other shoppers may choose to skip on features as a way to keep the cost down.

There are a few features that you will want to consider when you are picking out a product. One important feature is a rainfly. A rainfly is a cover that fits over the roof  and is fully waterproof. Since the rainfly is removable, you can take it off when conditions are dry and only use it when you expect rain or lots of dew. A rainfly will also help retain heat as well so this is an important feature for you to have because your protection against cold, windy, and rainy weather is enhanced when you use a rainfly. You can get a rainfly that only covers the roof or you can look for a tent with a rainfly that covers the entire tent.

Ventilation is another feature that you will want to have no matter what sort of tent you end up purchasing. There are different forms of ventilation but all of them consist of mesh panels that can be covered in the event of rain. Ventilation is important because it will help you maintain a comfortable temperature in the tent and it will also allow for cross ventilation in the tent as well. This will help keep the tent free from condensation. Tent ventilation comes in different sizes so if you are in hot and humid areas than you should look for large vent panels while products for cold and cool areas should have smaller vent panels in them to help retain heat.

Awnings are another feature that is useful in a camping tent, though it is purely optional. An awning is a shelter that attaches to the front of the tent and may even have a floor on it as well. This will help keep rain from getting in the tent when you enter it and it will also provide you with a place to remove your shoes as well. You are far less likely to track sand, dirt, or mud into your tent when you leave your shoes outside but you can’t leave your shoes in the rain either. This is where an awning will be helpful because you will have a dry outdoor spot for your shoes or boots.

Many people will also look for camping products that have interior storage such as loops and pockets. Loops are useful because they allow you to hang items from the ceiling of the tent. For example, many people will choose to hang a lantern or clothing from tent loops which helps save space on the floor of the tent. Some people even attach a small shelf to tent loops so that they can store lightweight gear on the shelf. Pockets are also useful because you can put items that you need to keep handy such as cell phones, lighters, or prescriptions in the pockets and have them readily accessible to you.

Some people even consider the number of tent poles to be a feature. Many modern products use tent poles that are located inside of fitted sleeves so that you can easily and quickly set up the tent. You will also see that many are free standing and will stand up without any stakes. This can be helpful in the event that you need to move your tent or even shake it out before you put it away. You should look for ones that have quick setup features such as color-coded clips and poles as well as free-standing ones as this will help you set up camp quickly.

Camping tents have many more features than what has been discussed but the important idea is that you make yourself aware of the features that are available. This will allow you to pick out a tent that has the right number of features for your needs a camper. Some features are more important than other features but you will find that the quality of the tent can improve significantly when the tent has features such as a rainfly or gear loops. The better job you do picking out features that go with your tent, the more satisfied you will be with the tent in the long run.

Quality

It is important that you find a tent that has the proper quality for your needs. Ones that are well made will make your time camping enjoyable and comfortable while one that is poorly made will become a headache. Nobody ever wants to own a product that won’t stay up because one of the poles break or has a tear in the fabric. Instead, you will want to make sure that yours is both strong and durable so that you are well protected from the outside weather and have a cozy place to sleep at night.

The poles are an important area for you to check because if a pole breaks. You are looking for poles that are strong enough to hold the enclosure up in good conditions as well as poor weather conditions. For example, the poles need to be strong enough to support during wind and rain since both weather conditions will add stress. It is also important that any clips that are used to attach the tent to the frame are strong as well and do not break or tear when they are under stress.

Many poles are made of fiberglass rods that are lightweight and will bend. This is important because a lightweight frame will make it easier for you to carry your camping enclosure to your campsite. The poles also need to be flexible in the case of dome style so that the entire enclosure maintains a proper shape. However, sometimes the fiberglass poles are too lightweight and will snap or break when they are put under stress. This is something that you are trying to avoid and you should instead look for fiberglass poles that are thicker and stronger. Thicker poles may weight slightly more than thin poles but the extra weight is well worth it since they are noticeably more durable than the thin fiberglass poles.

Sometimes camping enclosures have poles that are made of aluminum rather than fiberglass. Aluminum is a lightweight metal that is much stronger than fiberglass rods and it is typically used with larger products. When you are looking for camping enclosures that sleep a large group of people, you will find that aluminum has a much higher quality because larger ones will put more stress on the frame. When you are looking at aluminum poles, you will need to make sure that all of the welds in the frame are high quality as a poor weld will break. The thickness of the aluminum frame also matters since thin frames are not as durable.

After you look at the frame, you will want to turn your attention to the canvas. The canvas should have a thickness that is proper for the kind of material used to make the canvas. In other words, nylon can be thin while cotton should be thick. However, neither material should be so thin that the product isn’t durable. You do not want to end up in a situation where the walls of the tent end up breaking or ripping due to severe wind. In addition to the thickness of the material, you will want to take a look at the seams and stitching on the tent as well.

One of the first things that you will want to check is to make sure that all seams are sealed so that water does not leak inside. Not only should the seams be sealed in the first place, but they should also be sealed in a consistent fashion throughout the entire product. You do not want to find that one corner leaks water because there was something one with how the seams were sealed in that area. While you are looking at the seams, you will want to take a look at the stitching. All of the stitches should be tight and strong. The stitching will be pulled apart as you stretch it over the frame so it needs to be strong enough to withstand that force without breaking. You should try and avoid products that have few stitches in the seams or stitches that have loose threads.

Your chances of getting a high-quality enclosure will improve when you take the time to inspect known trouble areas. The two most important areas are the frame and the canvas so these are the areas that you will need to look over for defects. Should you discover any defects, you should either repair the defects or exchange the enclosure for a different one. This will help you avoid unpleasant surprises when you should be enjoying your time camping.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What sort of items should I purchase to go with my tent?

A: When you are camping, you will almost certainly want to bring a broom and a dustpan with you. This is because you are likely to track sand, dirt, or even mud with you when you enter your enclosure. By having a means to sweep the floor, you are less likely to have to worry about your enclosure getting too dirty and having the dirt spread into your clothing and bedding. It will also help you sweep out when it is time to put it away.

Q: What is the difference between a three season and four season tent?

A: Three season products use thinner material and have larger ventilation panels. This makes them suitable for fall, spring, and summer but they are not intended to be used in cold winter weather. If you are going to camp in the winter then you will need a four-season product that has thicker walls and is better insulated. This will help you retain heat which will keep you more comfortable and prevent sickness or death when camping in the winter.

Q: What is a good tent for hiking?

A: When you are hiking, you should look for small products that do not weigh much. In most cases, the smaller the enclosure is, the better it will be for hiking. There are plenty of choices when it comes to enclosure styles that are suitable for hiking but the important thing that you will want to look for is a product that is suitable for one or two people the most. It is also best that you look for nylon products as they weigh less.

Q: Should I consider getting a popup tent?

A: Popup tents are a great option for when you want to set up camp quickly. These will simply set themselves up as soon as they have been removed from their storage back and you will only need to stake them down once they have fully popped up. However, you will need to keep in mind that pop up ones can be difficult to put away once you have finished using them since it is against their natural state to be folded up.

Q: How can I keep my camping tent free from insects?

A: Many of these camping products have mesh screens that are used to block insects when the vents are open. However, you need to make sure that the screen openings are too small to allow the passage of insects and they also need to be in working order as well. The best thing that you can do is fully close the product while you are not using it as this will help keep insects from getting in in the first place.
